A Pagan's Domestic Violence 101

A pagan-inclusive introduction to the basics of domestic violence.

This class is an introduction to domestic violence with an inclusion of more pagan-specific perspectives, questions, and common modes of abusive behavior. it is meant to be a foundational class on which the rest of MJ's domestic violence-oriented education will be based.

We will discuss:

  • Some of the varying definitions of domestic violence and provide a working behavioral definition
  • The cycle of violence
  • Common dynamics of unequal power and some of the ways in which they can manifest
  • Sociopolitical factors contributing to domestic violence as a public health crisis
  • Why people choose to cause harm and what it takes for long-term change

Our discussion is inclusive of personal identities and relationship models which are queer, polyamorous, kinky, or otherwise might not fit some of the mainstream narratives around gender and sexuality which are commonly found in domestic violence resources.

Who is this class for?

Anyone of any gender or age over 16 who is looking for fundamental, evidence-based information about domestic violence which includes some pagan-focused information. It does not assume that students will have any prior knowledge or experience in domestic violence.

What this class does not offer:

  • Certification or licensing
  • Practical training on how to be a better support person or service provider (keep an eye out for MJ's other courses for that!)
  • Spiritual guidance or counseling

Marjorie Ní Chobhthaigh

Marjorie (Mx., they/them) works full-time in California social services providing crisis intervention in domestic violence, prevention education, and training for new advocates and other service providers. Their MSc in Religious Studies concentrated on contemporary American spiritual movements with neopaganism as the focus. As a devotional multi-tradition polytheist and spiritworker, and also as someone who is neurodivergent and queer, their spiritual path and political/advocacy work are tied inextricably together.
